India’s electric car market is on fire, and July 2025 just proved it again. With strong month-on-month growth and some serious year-on-year gains, EV adoption in the country is moving faster than ever before. The total number of electric passenger vehicles sold in July 2025 reached nearly 15,300 units, showing an impressive 91% jump compared to July 2024 and a 10% increase over June this year.

Tata Motors continues to dominate the segment, but MG Motor and Mahindra are right on its tail. Meanwhile, Hyundai, BYD, BMW, and others are slowly building their presence. Here’s a detailed look at how each brand performed last month.

Tata Motors Retains No.1 Spot

Tata Motors retained its top spot in July, selling 5,972 electric cars. This figure gives the homegrown automaker close to 40% market share, keeping it well ahead of the competition. The main driver of these numbers? The newly launched Harrier EV, which is drawing in strong interest from Indian buyers thanks to its stylish design, long range, and premium features.

Tata already had a solid EV lineup with the Nexon EV, Tiago EV, and Tigor EV, and the Harrier EV has only added more firepower. The brand’s focus on offering electric options across various price points continues to work in its favor.

MG Grows Strong with Windsor, M9 & Cyberster

JSW MG isn’t far behind. In July, it sold 5,013 EVs, which translates to about 33% share of the electric car market. The Windsor EV, a popular family-oriented SUV, has been a big success. MG has also been strengthening its premium EV portfolio with the launch of the MG M9 and the Cyberster—two bold and futuristic additions that are creating buzz.

The brand’s aggressive pricing and expanding EV infrastructure have helped it grow steadily, making it Tata’s biggest challenger right now.

Mahindra Sees Explosive Year-on-Year Growth

Mahindra clocked 2,789 electric car sales in July. While that’s a distant third compared to Tata and MG, what’s impressive is the 435% year-on-year growth. This major leap has come thanks to its newly introduced Born Electric range, which includes the XUV400, XUV 9e, and BE.05 models.

Compared to June 2025, Mahindra did see a 13% drop, but this could just be a short-term dip. Overall, Mahindra’s contribution to FY26 electric car sales now stands at a strong 21.6%. If it keeps the momentum going with new launches and wider availability, it could disrupt the top-two battle very soon.

Hyundai and BYD Make Steady Progress

Hyundai recorded 602 units in July, up 11% from June. While not massive in volume, the Korean brand has been quietly consistent this year. Models like the Kona Electric and the Ioniq 5 continue to attract urban buyers looking for reliable EVs from a global brand.

BYD, the Chinese automaker, sold 453 EVs last month. Though this was 10% lower than June, it’s still 27% higher than its July 2024 numbers. BYD’s strategy of focusing on premium offerings like the Atto 3 and Seal appears to be slowly gaining traction in India.

Luxury Brands: BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Citroën

BMW sold 225 units, nearly 3 times more than what it sold in July 2024. While flat compared to June, it’s a solid performance in the luxury EV space.

Mercedes-Benz moved 85 electric cars, slightly down month-on-month but still stronger than last year.

Citroën, unfortunately, had a rough month with only 41 EVs sold. That’s a steep 74% drop year-on-year, and a noticeable dip from June as well.
